Leh, the capital of Ladakh, was once a major stop on the Central Asia’s Silk Route.

Spend the rest of the day to relax at the hotel and to acclimatize to higher altitude level in Leh.

In the evening, take a stroll along the main bazaar, observing the crowd and peering into curio shops. Walking around the bazaar is a wonderful introduction to life in Leh.

Chang Gali, behind the main bazaar is less bustling but has intriguing little shops selling curios and jewellery like pearls, turquoise, coral, malachite, lapis and many other kinds of semi-precious stones, as well as curiously carved Yakhorn boxes, quaint brass locks, china ornamental bowls etc.

Later, we visit Shanti Stupa at sunset time. Built by the Japanese for World Peace, Shanti Stupa is a magnificent white-domed structure on the hilltop of Changspa. The stupa was inaugurated by the Dalai Lama in 1985. From there one can see a spectacular view of Leh town. The stupa looks best at night when it is beautifully illuminated with glittering lights.

Founded by Ringchen Zangpo, the Great Translator, the Alchi Gompa displays a Kashmiri influence in its art and architecture. Within the monastery you can see many beautiful images of Buddha.

Thereafter, continue to drive to Spituk Gompa which is on the hilltop near Indus river. Founded in the 11th century by Od-de, the elder brother of Lha Lama Changchub Od when he came to Maryul in the 11th Century. He introduced the monastic community. When Lotsewa Rinchen Zangpo (Translator) came to that place he said that an exemplary religious community would arise there and so the monastery was called Spituk (exemplary).

After lunch, visit the Namgyal Tsemo Gompa which was constructed in 1430. This historic gompa has a rich collection of Buddhist art and manuscripts and an image of Buddha which is 3-story high. There is a ruined fort ahead of the monastery from which you can see panoramic views.

Naropa, a Buddhist scholar visited Ladakh in 11th century and spent many years meditating in a cave. Naropa then caused a split in the surrounding hillside and due to this, the lake emptied.
