The palace complex at the foot of the rock still has the remains of four indoor swimming pools where the king’s 500 concubines bathed. The palace structure was built with complex water arteries in the walls that provided natural air conditioning in the hot climate. On the summit, reached with the help of metal staircases and ladders, you can see the remains of the palace walls, gardens and ponds.

The mirror walls of the Sigiriya rock still retain the world-famous frescoes of the king’s concubines, who originated from all parts of the world.

Home to the most coveted, largest remaining fortress in Asia built by European occupiers, Galle is the administrative centre of the southern province. The coastal city is one of the main attractions because of the Galle Fort, a UNESCO Heritage site. Galle was a buzzing focal point for traders since the times of kings. It was here the Portuguese first stepped on our island and worked their way towards colonization of our country. Galle is the best example of a fortified city built by the Portuguese in Asia, showing the interaction between Portuguese architectural styles and native traditions. There are more wonders to behold in Galle. Away from the city stands proudly Sri Lanka's oldest light station dating back to 1848. The lighthouse was originally built by the British to guide the sailors back home.

Its brightly burning yellow light was a beacon towards safety for the mariners on board longing to return to their family and loved ones. Basking on the coast of Sri Lanka in the bay of Galle, the Fort was first built by the Portuguese in 1588 before being extensively fortified by the Dutch in the mid-1600s. The garrison is to date the best-preserved fortification with architectural influence from 3 major nations: Portuguese that originally built it, Dutch under whose period it reached its zenith and the British that renovated it. When it comes to fortified towns, nothing can compare to the Galle Dutch Fort.
